My Favourite Things This Week

🛠️ Creator Tool I Made For You

The Editing Scrapbook System - This is a tool I’ve made to help you whether you edit your own videos or collaborate with a video editor.

Over the past few years, I have worked with various YouTube video editors—some good, some bad, and some incredible. Both the editor and I have always appreciated clear communication.

How often have you tried to describe a visual idea that's crystal clear in your head, but struggled to verbalize it? This can leave your editor confused or result in a first draft that is far from what you intended.

When I was working full-time as Ali Abdaal’s YouTube Producer, I found it incredibly useful to show editors a GIF of an animation, graphic, font, etc., and explain how I'd like to recreate it in our style for Ali's branding.

Over time, I have built out my own Notion database filled with hundreds of different assets.

This allows me to quickly copy and paste a link to my editor, who can grasp the animation I want in the video.

I call this The Editing Scrapbook System, and I'm sharing this vital resource with you today, for free.

With it, you can start building your scrapbook from scratch and create a clear mood board for the vibe you're aiming for on your channel. If you want to hear more about how I work with my video editor you can watch this video.

📕 Tweet Thread I’m Reading

A YouTube Strategist's Thoughts Going Into 2024 - We’re a week into the New Year and for many of you this will be the year you start your YouTube Channel.

One thing that I love to do towards the end/start of a year is to read everyone’s life lessons, goals, and plans as they reflect on 2023 and look forward to 2024. A thread that caught my eye was from Denver, a 1M subscribers creator turned creative manager for some huge YouTubers.

If you’re thinking about getting started on creating videos this year, you should have a read of his thoughts going into 2024:

  • Stop worrying about Average Views Per Viewer or other metrics and focus on things that move the needle.

  • Watch time is still king; make longer videos.

  • Creators uploading slightly above-average videos more frequently will often beat creators who put more time, energy, and money into less frequent uploads. Unless you're MrBeast

  • AI thumbnails are a thing, a very real and effective thing. Use them.

I recommend checking out the full thread from Denver here.

🎥 Video I’m Watching

How I Built A $1M Business From This Starbucks - In 2023 alone, Starter Story gained approximately 114K subscribers, Pat Walls, the founder of the channel, walks us through how he built a million-dollar business by dedicating 2 hours of deep work a day from inside a Starbucks.

Thanks for reading, if you want to reach out to me, just send a tweet to @WhiffenYT. Have a wonderful weekend!
